If you missed last week’s episode of The Walking Dead, you should probably get on that. But if you were one of the 16.1 million who tuned in, here’s an exclusive scoop with one of the gruesomely-departed stars.
The Walking Dead Season 4: Have We Really Seen the Last of Patrick? Vincent Martella Says…
Patrick (Vincent Martella) didn’t even live through one episode of The Walking Dead Season 4 before a flu-like sickness took his life mid-shower, causing his bloody eyeballs to pop out of his head (ewe!) and turned him into a walker, but is it possible that we haven’t seen the last of this Harry Potter-esque young kid? Will you find out in this Wetpaint exclusive interview by Samantha Leffler?
“[Patrick’s death] does something very specific to the group because of the type of person Patrick was. Not only was he a friend to Carl, but Rick knows that Carl is friends with Patrick, he wants him to be friends with Patrick and this younger group of kids because of all the terrible things that happened to him.” Vincent assures us that Patrick’s mysterious death will have a profound effect on the inhabitants of the prison, specifically Carl Grimes (Chandler Riggs).
All Vincent knew going in was that Patrick is “an incredibly polite young teenager and although he’s been in this really terrible situation just like everybody else has, he’s not a hardened individual from it.” He “still retains all his manners his parents taught him and all his values,” Vincent adds.
If you ask us, those qualities certainly came across in Vincent’s performance.
But still, we were missing something from this young character. Interestingly enough, when we asked Vincent about Patrick’s parents and family, he seemed to hint that there’s still more to that storyline. “That I actually cannot tell you,” he said with a laugh. If Patrick’s storyline is done, then why the secrecy? Color us curious!
And the aftermath of Patrick’s passing goes beyond the younger Grimes as well. As Vincent continues, “Everybody in the prison got to know these kids and everyone is sort of this family now, for anyone to have now died — especially within the walls of the prison and someone so young — it certainly won’t have a very good impact mentally or emotionally on this group of people.”
You can say that again. The image of Patrick’s bloody eyeballs is seared into our brains. Forever.
The death was gruesome but not at the hands of a Walker. “I think this is very, very cool because you haven’t actually seen too many people die in this way,” Vincent says. “This reminds everybody — the audience and the characters — that there are dangers that can be worse than the walkers. I definitely enjoyed getting a chance to die this way,” he concludes with a laugh.
As for our theory that we haven’t seen the last of Patrick quite yet? When we floated the idea of flashbacks by him, he said: “That’s another thing I can’t really tell you guys. I hope in the coming episodes there will be more fun stuff for my character to get to do.”
Hmm, sounds like we could most definitely be in for some Patrick flashbacks in the near future! Do you think we’ve seen the last of Patrick already, or will we learn more about him and his family as the season progresses?
